How To Make Proper English Crumpets Recipe

Crumpets are an absolute favourite for breakfast or afternoon tea. We used to buy these frequently when we lived in England and really miss them, but they are another favourite we can't buy here, so we have to cook them ourselves.

This recipe makes 6 English crumpets

These English crumpets are delicious and much better tasting than the ones you buy in the supermarkets. They are low in fat, the perfect warm snack, and great for breakfast.

English crumpets should be enjoyed warm, just out of the toaster. I like them topped with jam, Marmite, or melted butter, but you can top them with just about any sweet or savoury topping, such as honey, syrup, peanut butter, or fresh fruit.

To make these crumpets, you will need non-stick crumpet rings (I use 9cm diameter rings with a depth of 3cm) and a flat-bottom skillet or frying pan.

Ingredients (makes 6 English crumpets):

  • Flour - 150g plain white flour
  • Water - 200ml water
  • Salt - ½ tsp salt
  • Sugar - ½ tsp sugar
  • Baking powder - 1 tsp baking powder
  • Dried yeast - 1 tsp dried yeast

Make the English Crumpet Batter

  1. Add the flour, water, and salt to a bowl.
  2. Mix vigorously with a whisk (at least 5 minutes) to create your crumpet batter.
  3. Mix a few ml of water with your dried yeast.
  4. Add the sugar, baking powder and yeast mixture to the bowl and mix for another 30 seconds until you have a clear batter.
  5. Cover the mixing bowl and put into a warm place for 15 mins.
💡
Top tip: make sure your mixing bowl is bigger than you need as the crumpet batter will expand quite a bit.

Bake your English Crumpets

  1. Place a greased metal biscuit cutter in the middle of a non-stick frying pan.
  2. Pre-heat your frying pan on a hob on medium heat setting.
  3. Before you start, stir your batter to remove any large air bubbles.
  4. Use a ladle to pour the batter into the Crumpet rings inside the pan to about halfway up.
  5. Wait approximately 4 minutes until the edges of the crumpets have set, then carefully lift the ring off the Crumpet using an oven mitt as the rings will be very hot.
  6. Continue to cook until the middle of the Crumpet is not too gooey, then flip it over and brown the tops.
  7. Remove the baked Crumpet from the pan (if the top looks a bit gooey, flip it over in the pan for a few seconds)
  8. Cool on a wire rack.
  9. Repeat the above to make as many as you can eat!
  10. Toast your crumpets and enjoy with butter or anything else you like.
